Anti-Hunger Hero Threatens House Finance Committee with Hunger Strike
Press Conference Statement – Delivered by Kokayi Nosakhere, Lead Coordinator of the By2015:AMERICA Movement on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.
This is written down because I am criticized for being passionate and emotional about a subject that we should be passionate and emotional about.
The following statement is on behalf of 51,000 hungry Alaskan children.
My name is Kokayi Nosakhere, the Lead Coordinator of the By2015:AMERICAmovement. For the past four years I have completely devoted myself towards making a significant contribution within the anti-hunger network. Specifically, I champion the feeding of children – all 19.5 million hungry American children.
WithinAlaska, a brave politician named Senator Bill Wielechowski also chooses to champion the feeding ofAlaska’s children. On the urging of the anti-hunger network in 2009, he put forth Senate Bill 213. This Bill devoted $2 million of State fund to School Meals.Alaskais one of 12 States which doesn’t perform this duty.
Because of the federal reimbursement rates, this $2 million is paid back toAlaskaby the increased participation of 8,009 children.
So, we have a good Bill. Perfect in the world of politics. One that takes care of a social ill and pays for itself. Yet, the House Finance Committee failed to see any value in the Bill.
In 2009 Senate Bill 213 passed the Senate, landed in the House Finance Committee and languished there. It sat there in 2010 and died in Committee.
Undaunted, in 2011 Senator Wielechowski put forth Senate Bill 3, essentially the same Bill as 213. Again, it passed the Senate and landed in the House Finance Committee. Without outside intervention Senate Bill 3 will die in Committee during the 2012 Legislative Session.
We cannot permit this to happen. The By2015:AMERICAMovement cannot permit this good Bill to die in Committee. On behalf of hungry children, we are choosing to intervene.
To the House Finance Committee: we have patiently participated in the political process for three years in a row. Phone Calls. A letter campaign. We recently progressed to Community Council Resolutions. For some reason, the members of the House Finance Committee have misplaced their humanity. They are choosing not to listen to the prayers of the Children. Apparently, you need prompting.
I want to be clear – House Finance Committee – you have until February 6, 2012 to schedule Senate Bill 3 for a vote on the House Floor. If you do not choose to do your job and release Senate Bill 3 for a vote, I will fly toJuneauand engage in a Hunger Strike until you find your humanity and schedule Senate Bill 3 for a vote.
Again, to the House Finance Committee: we are serious. We are determined. We will not permit you to act like political criminals and refuse to support the feeding of our children.
If you wish to get in contact with me, I am available at firstname.lastname@example.org. Or you call me at 907-884-4710.
Hear me House Finance Committee! You are not dealing with an ordinary community activist. I am a graduate of the Million Man March. For the next 30 days, I will perform my duty. I am going to call on Grandmothers and Grandfathers. I am going to call on Fathers and Mothers. I am going to call on Teachers and Ministers. I am going to call on those Brave Americans who still remain to stand up and demand that our government do the right thing by our children.
To the Children ofAmerica– hold on Babies – intervention is coming whether the political process likes it or not!
